Texas Gov. Greg Abbott appointed two Southeast Texas residents as student regents to their respective universities for terms set to expire on May 31, 2024.

Appointed to Texas Southern University was Dylan Getwood, of Port Arthur, who is pursuing a degree in health information management at TSU.

Appointed to the Texas State University System was Kelvin Elgar, of Beaumont, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Lamar University.

In stating why he chose the Beaumont higher learning institution for his advanced degree, Elgar praised LU’s climate of connection for being a grounding center for his educational pursuits.

“I believe that everyone’s future is uncertain and the only way to take a step towards certainty is to find a compass,” Elgar shared. “Lamar University is that compass for me. The community, classes, organizations, staff, and every other feature that Lamar has to offer has helped me gain a better understanding of where I want to be in my career and because of this, I’m blessed to be a Cardinal.”
