The Greater Orange Chamber of Commerce will host the Southeast Texas High School Fishing Association Fishing Tournament on Saturday, April 8, at the City of Orange Boat Ramp on Simmons Drive. The Southeast Texas Fishing Association mission is to promote the sport of high school fishing, enable youth to become better students, anglers, and people while exposing them to all the opportunities that competitive bass fishing offers, and provide scholarships for continuing education. The tournament in Orange on the Sabine River will be the first-ever held away from Rayburn-Umphrey Family Pavilion. While the kids are out fishing, the spectators can enjoy Art in the Park held in Stark Park on Green Avenue.
The Chamber will recognize and congratulate the outstanding high school seniors for their academic success and encourage them in their pursuit of excellence. Education of our young people is one of our top priorities. It is an investment in the lives of our children and in the future of all.
The luncheon will be held Thursday, May 18, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Orange County Convention and Expo Center. The speaker will be Hal Bowman — the creator and sole presenter of Teach Like A Rock Star. The Chamber is again asking area businesses and industries to show their support by means of financial assistance. The cost is $30 per person, and we are expecting approximately 250 students. You and your company representative are also invited to attend. Please contact the Chamber for more information on how to sponsor a student at (409) 883-3536. All proceeds made from the luncheon are used for scholarships.
The Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Open Fishing Tournament hosted by the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce will be held June 15-17 at the City of Orange Boat Ramp on Simmons Drive. The Bassmaster Open is a series of tour tournaments that tier to the Bassmaster Classic and Bassmaster Elite Series. It is divided into three regions: Southern, Northern and Central. Open fields are made up of pro and co-anglers. The Top 5 pros at the end of the season in each division qualify for the Bassmaster Elite Series. The winner of each Open qualifies for the Bassmaster Classic, after competing in all three Opens in the winner’s division.
In conjunction with the Bassmaster Open Fishing Tournament the Chamber will bring back the Orange County River Festival. The festival will include food and craft vendors, a carnival and the kids fish tank. There will be entertainment on Friday and Saturday night after the weigh-ins. This will be a family fun event for all ages so make plans to attend. If you would like to sponsor an event or have a booth contact the Chamber office at (409) 883-3536.
2017 marks the 140th anniversary of the Lutcher & Moore Lumber Company’s (LMLC) arrival on the Gulf Coast. The Stark Foundation Library & Archive holds many records and documents from the corporate side of their operations. They would like to learn more about the people who worked in this important industry. Was your grandfather a sawyer or skidder? It took many a lumberjack, logger, grader and watchmen to make Lutcher & Moore one of the most successful lumber companies in American. There will be a gathering of the descendants and family members of LMLC employees on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 1-4 p.m. If you have any old photos you would like to share or need more information, please contact Jenniffer Hudson Connors, email@example.com or Jeff Harris at jharriswhstarkhouse.org.
