Changing of the guard as appraisal district preps for busy season

Retiring chief appraiser Roland Beiber takes a stroll down memory lane.

“The rolls didn’t exist,” Jefferson County Appraisal District (JCAD) Chief Appraiser Roland Bieber told the Business Journal of his beginning in an office that would span more than 30 years. “We pretty much drew (by hand) this whole thing up from scratch.”

On Bieber’s last day in office before he entered retirement, he sat down with the Journal to tell the story of just how the appraisal district came to be – and where he hopes it continues to progress in the future.

Coastal Welding Supply names new sales directors

Jim Smith and Gary Sztaba have accepted the new positions of Directors of Sales for Coastal Welding Supply, the company announced in a March 6 press release.

Coastal Welding Supply’s outside sales teams will be under the direction of Smith who joined the second generation welding supply  and industrial and specialty gas company in 2007, and 14-year veteran, Gary Sztaba will head up the inside sales teams.

Business Lessons from George Washington

As a history major, I am intrigued by the origins of our great country.  George Washington is a logical place to start.

(Feb. 16) we celebrate(d) his birthday with Abraham Lincoln’s as Presidents Day – the third Monday in February.

But what do we really know about this founding father who led our country through the Revolutionary War?

The New York Times wrote, “By comparing textbooks used in the 1960s with those of today, researchers at Mount Vernon, Washington’s home in Virginia, have concluded that Washington now occupies just 10 percent of the space he had then.”

While small businesses are very important job generators, more than half of Americans are working in large enterprises. The tendency toward large or small size firms varies markedly by industry as well as geography. Average pay per employee is also affected by size. The essential requirements for the success of any business are largely the same (quality workforce and infrastructure, predictable regulatory environment, manageable cost, and tax structure). However, there are differences, which can inform the policy and economic development process.
